Ayurvedic and Homeopathy Cover In Health Insurance

India is a land which has a rich history where sages and saints gave birth to various practices which are being highly propagated in today’s age. Whether it is Yoga which has become the most sought-after form of physical exercise or Ayurveda which is a medical blessing, India is credited with being the birthplace of these and many more miracles. Even the western world has realized the significance of Indian practices and is adopting them without hesitation. When it comes to medicinal treatments, Ayurveda is becoming highly recognized. The herbs used in making medicines are natural and have no side-effects and the treatments themselves are highly effective. Homoeopathy, invented by Hippocrates, has also been recognized as a good alternative treatment which has no side-effects. But, like other medical treatments, both Ayurveda and Homeopathy involve expenses. How do you pay for them?

What if I say that you can pay for Ayurvedic and Homeopathic treatments through your health insurance plan? Yes, you heard me right! While a few years ago health insurance policies excluded Ayurvedic or Homeopathic treatments, currently, many plans offer cover for these treatments. Let’s see what these health plans promise.

Coverage for AYUSH treatments

Not only Ayurveda and Homeopathy, but many health insurance plans also cover Unani and Siddha treatments too. Coverage for Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy can be found in many plans under the head ‘AYUSH treatments’ as they are popularly called in short.

Though coverage for AYUSH treatments is available very commonly in the health insurance marketplace, there are some points which you should remember. These are as follows:

The cover is not universally available

AYUSH coverage is found in many health insurance plans but not in all plans. Basic health insurance plans might exclude coverage for AYUSH treatments as such treatments are called an alternative form of treatments which are not recognized by all health plans. So, if you want to cover for Ayurvedic and Homeopathic treatments, search for plans which offer such coverage.

The coverage is limited

Another aspect of AYUSH coverage is that there is a limit on the amount allowed for covering such treatments. This limit is expressed either as a percentage of the Sum Insured (10% to 25% of the Sum Insured) or as an absolute amount. So, when you make a claim for AYUSH treatments, your claim would be limited to the limit specified in your policy. However, there are some health plans which also allow coverage up to the basic Sum Insured under the policy.

The treatment availed should be eligible

Ayurvedic, Homeopathic or any other form AYUSH treatments would be eligible for a claim if they fulfil the prescribed rule. The rule states that the treatment should be taken in a recognized Government hospital. Alternatively, the treatment can be taken in any institute which is recognized by the Government and/or accredited either by the Quality Council of India or by the National Accreditation Board on Health. Only if the rule is fulfilled will the claim for AYUSH treatments be recognized by the insurance company and paid.

So, you can get coverage for Ayurveda or Homeopathy in your health insurance plan. However, you should remember the above-mentioned points in context to AYUSH coverage. Here is a list of some popular health insurance plans which allow AYUSH coverage and the limits to the coverage allowed.
